Through
British Newbury Toys at http://www.toysoldiers.org/britains.htm , there is a
version of Jacques III de Créquy available for GBP
3.95 (price as per April 2001). SIEC had a number of these
delivered in June 2001, and one of those are shown at the
left. Unfortunately, the créquier in this partcular
deliverance has wrong shape on the leaves (they should look
more like like spades, and not like clubs as here). However,
the toysoldier is very nice, and as we have informed Newbury
Toys about this little fault, we feel sure that in the future
Jacues III de Créquy will appear with the right drawing.
Who were
Jean and Jacques III de Créquy?
Read more about Jean de Créquy and his French family here (English only) and here (partly in English about The Order of
the Golden fleece, but mostly in Norwegian about the family).
There are of course several Jean de Créqui's to chose among,
but the most prominent one would be Jean V de Créqui, among
the first members of the Order of the Golden Fleece (the
Toison-order).
Jacques III
de Créquy, Jean's uncle, was among the unfortunate four
members of the de Créqui family who were killed during the
battle of Azincourt on 25th October 1415. Among with soldiers
and knights who were captured during this battle, Jacques de
Créquy was killed on the English king's order at at time in
the battle when he probably thought himself surroundered by
the French and thus needed room for fighting. Only the most
prominent prisoners escaped death, and even a nobleman as
high in rank as Jaques III de Créqui was executed. These
executions were probably unnecessary, and the bowmen who were
first ordered to do the killings refused to do so.
